HANRIOT HD.1 3-VIEW DRAWING

This 3-view drawing is reproduced here from the Harleyford publication Fighter Aircraft of World War 1. The Hanriot HD.1 was a French-designed fighter aircraft rejected by the French Aeronautique Militaire but embraced by Belgium and Italy. To Belgium were delivered 79 known HD.1 aircraft which fully equipped two fighter escadrilles and portions of others.

THE MODEL TO BE BUILT

The model to be built is Hanriot HD.1 aircraft No.24 of the 9eme Escadrille flown by Willy Coppens, the top balloon-busting ace of World War 1. This image was produced by Alan Durkota. Consult French Aircraft of the First World War (see bibliography below).

Most of the model's interior is in place and painted.

The instrument panel is painted in Vallejo 929 Light Brown. The instruments are a one-piece decal from the kit's decal sheet.

Several construction steps are seen in this photo. After gluing the fuselage halves together, the lower wing was glued in place, followed by the tail unit. The Vickers machine gun, its ammunition feed and ejection chutes were next. A small headrest cushion was added. The rotary engine and its cowling came next. The landing gear was built using brass tube and rod with a make-shift axle.

This photo showes the additions to the tail unit. A single brass rod is added to support the vertical fin on both surfaces. A .006 MFT was added to the underside as additional support. The tailskid was fashioned from brass tube and rod. Lastly, the main fuselage wing struts of brass tube and rod were measured, constructed, and inserted.

The model is ready for its 5-color French 1917-1918 Camouflage Scheme. I have two sources: Eduard 8018 Instruction Pamphlet and Alan Durkota's scheme as shown in the Color Section of the French Aircraft of the First World War, page 591. The colors are Chestnut Brown, Dark Green, Light Green, Beige, and Black. All colors are treated with aluminum flake except black.The white tail is prepped for the white and mid-blue striped design. The rudder is prepped in yellow for the Belgian national insignia.

The application of decals shows well in this photo. The rudder tripes (left-to-right) are red. yellow, and black, for Belgium. The kit's decal was used which is slightly oversized. White glue was applied to the underside edges of the decal and allowed to dry. The excess was trimmed with sand paper and exposed areas were repainted to match the decal's color. The horizontal white and blue decal was cut into four pieces and applied. White glue was also 'painted' to the edges. Vallejo paints were used for touch-up. The white thistle was not altered. A scrap piece of brass was used for the tail skid.

CONSTRUCTION PHOTO No.7

The top wing was first glued to the fuselage struts. When thoroughly dry, the kit's plastic wing struts were glued in place. Wide masking tape was used to secure the two wings until the plastic glue had time to cure. None of the under surface areas (fuselage, wings, tail) have been painted. So, I applied one coat of Tamiya XF-16 ?Flat aluminum to those surfaces. When dry, another coat was applied excpet to the bottom wing underside because rigging lines will be pulled through the wing and glued from underneath then sanded smooth before a second and final coat is applied. This coating is a unique French application of clear dope mixed with a heavy concentration of aluminum powered flakes.

Rigging was rather simple compared, say, to the Sopwith F.1 Camel. I used .006 charcoal MFT. The rudder's serial number is a kit decal in white marked "H D 24".
